Course Description

Can you make corn dance without touching it? Let’s find out! In this Seasonal Family Science class, siblings can work together to conduct a bubbly fall experiment. First, we’ll predict what will happen when we place unpopped popcorn kernels in water. Then we’ll add baking soda and vinegar and watch closely. Will the kernels stay at the bottom, rise to the top, or move up and down? As we investigate, learners will discover that mixing baking soda and vinegar produces a gas. Tiny gas bubbles can attach to the kernels and help lift them. When the bubbles break at the surface, the kernels may sink and rise again. We’ll observe what happens in our own containers and talk about why different kernels might move differently. This class includes predictions, a live experiment, observation, and discussion. Siblings can share supplies and take turns adding ingredients, watching for changes, and reporting what they notice. No previous science knowledge is needed.
