Is your learner able to read basic words but still struggles with longer words, unfamiliar spelling patterns, or reading smoothly and confidently? In this small-group class, learners will strengthen the advanced phonics and word-reading skills they need to become more successful, independent readers.
Each 25-minute lesson follows a clear and predictable routine based on Science of Reading principles. Learners will receive explicit instruction in advanced decoding, spelling patterns, syllable types, word division, prefixes, suffixes, and other meaningful word parts. Rather than relying on guessing or memorizing long word lists, students will learn how to look closely at words, identify familiar patterns, break longer words into manageable parts, and apply what they know while reading and spelling.
Lessons may include oral sound practice, word building, word chaining, spelling activities, guided reading, short dictation exercises, and brief fluency practice. Learners will have frequent opportunities to read aloud, answer questions, and receive encouraging feedback in a class capped at six students.

- Reviewing advanced vowel patterns
- Reading r-controlled vowels and diphthongs
- Identifying the six syllable types
- Dividing and decoding multisyllabic words
- Reading words with prefixes and suffixes
- Recognizing base words and meaningful word parts
- Applying spelling rules and patterns
- Practicing sentence dictation
- Improving reading accuracy, fluency, and expression
- Building confidence when approaching unfamiliar words
This class is designed for learners who can already read simple sentences and basic one-syllable words. It is not intended for brand-new readers who are still learning letter sounds or blending short CVC words.
Because this is an ongoing class, skills will be reviewed regularly and taught through a variety of words, games, passages, and activities. Learners may join at any time, although they should have the foundational reading skills needed to participate successfully.
