Mission: Explain It! — Math & Science Writing Lab What if writing didn't start with a blank page—but with a mystery to solve, a problem to investigate, or a claim to prove? In Mission: Explain It!, students ages 10–14 strengthen their writing and communication skills by tackling engaging math and science challenges. Instead of writing about topics that feel disconnected from their interests, students become investigators, engineers, data detectives, and science communicators who have a real reason to explain their thinking. Each session follows a predictable, supportive mission format: students investigate a problem, talk through their ideas, gather evidence, organize their thinking, and create a written or visual response. They'll practice explaining how they solved a problem, interpreting data, supporting a claim with evidence, identifying mistakes in reasoning, comparing solutions, and communicating scientific ideas clearly. Along the way, they'll build practical skills in organization, paragraph development, evidence-based reasoning, vocabulary, revision, and argumentation. This class is designed for a wide range of learners, including students who have strong ideas but struggle to get them onto paper. Sentence starters, visual organizers, word banks, discussion, modeling, and multiple ways to communicate ideas provide support without removing the challenge. Students can learn to turn “I know the answer!” into “I can explain how I know.” Whether your student loves math and science, needs more confidence with writing, or simply wants a more interesting reason to write, every mission gives them an authentic purpose: solve the problem, explain the evidence, and convince HQ. Students can join individual sessions throughout the year, and the class works beautifully as a standalone writing experience or as an optional companion to Math Missions and science-based classes.
