Course Description

Welcome to Pompeii! In this interactive history class, learners will step back in time to the ancient Roman city of Pompeii. We will explore what everyday life was like before the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, including homes, streets, shops, food, entertainment, and daily routines. Then, the ground begins to shake. As the eruption unfolds, learners will become part of the story. They will make decisions about what to do, where to go, what to take, and when it is time to leave. Should you stay inside or leave the city? What would you take with you? Which direction should you travel? What should you do as ash begins covering the streets? Throughout the class, students will learn what was actually happening during the eruption and compare their choices with what historians and archaeologists have learned about the people of Pompeii. Learners will also discover how Pompeii was buried and why the city has helped historians learn so much about everyday life in ancient Rome. This class is designed to be interactive, discussion-based, and hands-on. Learners will make predictions, solve problems, follow an escape route, and think carefully about the difficult choices people faced. By the end of class, we will find out: Could YOU survive Pompeii?
