Course Description

Get ready to read, discuss, create, and build your way through Alcatraz Versus the Scrivener’s Bones, the second book in Brandon Sanderson’s Alcatraz vs. the Evil Librarians series! Alcatraz’s adventure continues as he travels deeper into the strange world of the Free Kingdoms. When his grandfather disappears, Alcatraz and his companions head toward the legendary Library of Alexandria—a place the Hushlands believe was destroyed long ago. Instead, they discover that the library still exists and is guarded by mysterious Curators who make obtaining a book much more dangerous than simply checking one out. Each week, learners will read the assigned chapters before class. During our meeting, we will discuss important events, character decisions, clues, surprising moments, humor, and predictions. Rather than focusing only on recalling facts, learners will be encouraged to explain their ideas, support their answers with details from the story, and consider how characters grow and change. Then we’ll turn the story into a Book Builders challenge! Learners will design and build something connected to that week’s reading. Challenges may involve unusual transportation, the Library of Alexandria, lenses, inventions, escape routes, or structures inspired by Alcatraz’s world. Students may use building bricks, magnetic tiles, blocks, cardboard, paper, craft supplies, or other materials they already have available. There is no single correct way to complete the challenges. Learners will be encouraged to experiment, problem-solve, make changes when a design does not work, and explain how their finished creation connects to the book. This class combines literature with hands-on learning for students who enjoy discussing books but also love to make, build, and create.
