Course Description

Why do green leaves turn yellow, orange, or red in the fall? Bring your siblings and investigate together! In this family science class, learners will explore how leaves use sunlight to help trees make food. We’ll learn about chlorophyll, the pigment that makes many leaves look green, and discover what changes as the days grow shorter. Along the way, learners will examine leaves, make predictions, and share what they notice. Then it’s time to make leaf rubbings! Each learner will place a real leaf beneath a sheet of paper and rub a crayon over it to reveal the leaf’s shape and veins. Siblings can compare their leaves and experiment with green, yellow, orange, and red crayons to create a collection of summer and fall colors. This class includes pictures, discussion, and a simple hands-on activity that siblings of different ages can enjoy together. Learners may share their discoveries aloud, but speaking is optional. No previous science knowledge is needed.
