Course Description

Can candy corn disappear? Let’s turn a favorite fall treat into a family science experiment! In this hands-on class, learners will test candy corn in three everyday liquids: water, white vinegar, and vegetable oil. Before adding the candy, we’ll make predictions. Which liquid will change it first? Will the color spread? Will the candy soften, shrink, or keep its shape? Siblings can work together to set up their cups and take turns being the measurer, candy dropper, and observation detective. We’ll use the same amount of each liquid and one similar-sized piece of candy corn per cup so we can make a fair comparison. As the experiment runs, learners will look closely at each cup and describe the changes they see. We’ll finish by comparing our results and using our observations to answer the class question. Learners will discover that a scientist’s job is to watch carefully and report what actually happened, even when the results surprise us! No previous science knowledge is needed. Families may share one set of supplies, and learners are welcome to participate in the discussion by speaking aloud or showing their cups on camera.
