Teens: Do you like to write? Do you want to grow in your writing skills? Do you want friends with similar values to read your stories and offer feedback and encouragement? Do you appreciate reading books that inspire you, and want to write stories like this to have a positive impact on the world? In the imitation of great writers like J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, who met regularly in the Oxford Inklings group to support each other in the craft of writing, this high school writing club is a space for young authors to collaborate and grow in their skills as well. 📝We gather to inspirit each other, and to help one another tap into the inspiration within to create the kind of stories that have shaped the world and our own lives. 🔥 In this light, we emphasize this spirit of helping each other think on things that are “true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable (Philippians 4:8).” Although plot, conflict, and villains are part of every story, we avoid sharing writing pieces that are overly dark, violent, or explicit (basically, keep it clean and wholesome enough to share with your pastor, priest or grandma). 😇This class is faith-based in perspective; though writing pieces shared in class are not required to mention God or religion, the content should be aligned with a Judeo-Christian worldview. ✅ Each meeting will include: 1. Teaching and discussion of writing techniques and themes (15 minutes) 2. A group writing warmup exercise where we build a story together with a given prompt (15 minutes) 3. “Open mic” time, where writers have the option of sharing their writing projects or ideas and giving each other feedback (15 minutes) 4. Explanation of the writing challenge to complete before the next week (5 minutes) Writers are invited to attend the live meetings whenever they can, even if they have to miss some weeks due to schedule conflicts. Some of the high schoolers are already working on stories that they are invited to bring to class for sharing, but this is not a prerequisite. You are welcome to come even if you do not have something to share, but still want to participate in the club’s creative collaboration.
