Know Your Terminology

Like any community, we have our own unique way of talking about what we do. Getting familiar with these terms will help you feel right at home in our marketplace and ensure your teaching or learning journey is seamless and delightful. Let’s explore the key terms that are integral to WonderWell Learning.

Course Definition

Courses are the core curricula or subject matter that will be taught. They include detailed lesson plans, required materials, and the overall structure of what will be taught. Courses are submitted for admin review and approval. Courses can run one time, for a set length, or can be ongoing.

There are three course types:

01

Stand-Alone Course

Stand-Alone courses are designed to be completed in one class meeting, and each session is scheduled for a single class.

Course examples

  • A single “Let’s Explore the Solar System” class.
  • A one-day art camp where learners complete a project from start to finish.
  • A single one-on-one tutoring session.
02

Multi-Day Course

Multi-Day courses feature sequential lessons, a set start and end date, and a consistent schedule. Learners are enrolled for the duration of the session and pay for the entirety of the session before their first class meets.

Course examples

  • A coding camp that meets every day for a single week.
  • A language arts course that meets Monday–Thursday every week for a semester.
  • A history unit study that meets once a week for 6 weeks.
  • A book club that meets weekly for 8 weeks to discuss and create projects for the same book.
  • A multi-week tutoring package in any subject.
  • Private or group music lessons.
03

Open Series Course

Open Series courses meet weekly on the same day and at the same time for the duration of a session. Individual classes typically follow the same theme and syllabus, and lessons do not build upon each other. Learners can enroll in any class offered and are not required to enroll for the entirety of the class dates offered within a session.

Course examples

  • A drawing course where learners meet a new animal each week to draw.
  • A multiplication games club where enrolled learners have fun practicing their multiplication facts.
  • A story time club where a different story is presented and discussed each week.
  • A homework support group where a teacher is present to answer questions.

Session Definition

Sessions are the scheduled offerings of an approved course that learners enroll in. Teachers can create multiple sessions from a single course with different dates, times, and frequencies. Since the initial course is admin-approved, teachers can create as many sessions as they’d like without needing additional approval.

When learners enroll, they enroll in a session of a course.

Class Definition

Classes are the individual meetings that learners attend. Each session may have one or more classes scheduled. For example, a course session that meets every Tuesday for four weeks has four classes that learners will attend.
