Course Description

Could someone really survive the traps in Home Alone? Could a train drift across a frozen lake like it does in The Polar Express? Could Buddy live on candy, candy canes, candy corn, and syrup in Elf? In this fun, fast-paced Christmas science class, learners will investigate the real science behind memorable moments from three popular holiday movies. Each class will focus on one movie and two connected science topics, giving students time to make predictions, watch short clips, examine what happens on screen, and compare movie fiction with real scientific facts. Learners will explore concepts such as force, gravity, friction, momentum, heat transfer, impact, nutrition, energy, speed, accuracy, and reaction time. Instead of simply being told whether a scene is realistic, students will be encouraged to look closely, notice details, ask questions, and use evidence to form a conclusion. Throughout class, we will sort movie moments into categories such as scientifically accurate, possible under certain conditions, exaggerated for entertainment, or completely fictional. Learners may be surprised to discover that some scenes are based on real science, while others would be far more dangerous, difficult, or impossible than they appear on screen. Short movie clips will be used as visual examples, followed by age-appropriate explanations and interactive discussion. Students will have frequent opportunities to vote, share ideas, defend their reasoning, and reconsider their first predictions after learning the science. This class is designed for learners who enjoy movies, unusual science questions, and lively discussion. No advanced science background is needed, and students do not need to have watched all three movies beforehand. Familiarity with the movies may add to the fun, but every scene and concept will be explained clearly during class.
