Guy Fawkes Day: Unravel the Mystery Behind Britain's Most Unusual History HolidayMy three kids enjoyed this class. They had fun learning about this unique holiday.
In this six-week study, high school students will be introduced to classic poetry and poets. The class will explore how to read poetry, how to find poetic tools and devices, and become familiar with famous poetry and writers. The goal for this course is to develop and inspire a love of creative writing and to see the beauty and creativity in poetry. Even if your student says they don't like poetry, I promise they will love this class! Each week students will listen to a short lecture on a poet's life and where they fit into the history of poetry (what movement they belonged to & what their personal style was). Then the lesson will move on to focusing on poetry reading. Students will read aloud in class, learn to annotate and do close readings of poems, dissect the meaning of the readings, and look for poetic devices. Poets covered: -William Wordsworth -Dylan Thomas -E.E. Cummings -William Shakespeare -Langston Hughes -Walt Whitman Topics covered include: -rhyme scheme -simile and metaphor -stanza and structure -villanelle -sonnet -modern American poetry, jazz-inspired poetry, Harlem Renaissance -Romantic poetry, Civil War-era poetry -free verse poetry For homework, students are asked each week to compose a poem in the style of the week or using the poetic tools discussed in class in addition to reading and annotating other poems by the author of the week. Please see the syllabus for a list of poems covered in class. Other poems by the poets will be assigned for homework. All will be classic poems, appropriate for high school students.

Art History Adventures: Discover Famous ArtistsThis is a subject matter I am not great at, and so it doesn't end up making it into my lessons, and it is so important! I love that I can have my daughters go to this class, so I know they are getting cultured, but I dont have to do it, honestly 🤣 They love art and it is awesome to hear about the stories behind people who made so many of the famous artwork we know today!

The Poetry Journey: Exploring Poets & Their CraftI honestly am not a huge poetry person, so I haven't really made it a priority, but this class changed my mind. Mrs. Elizabeth is very knowledgeable, and presents her class and interacts with students about the poet in such an engaging way. We tried this class kind of late in the year, and I so wish we had started earlier! This was such a good fit for my oldest daughter. She has made connections while watching/hearing about the author is other contexts because of Mrs. Elizabeth! I was very impressed and look forward to taking more classes this year.

Art History Adventures: Discover Famous ArtistsThis class was one of the highlights of our year! As mom, I learned so much just from what my girls would tell me about after class. It was such a great foundation for art history and they've developed a really great eye for placing a piece of art with its artist in the wild.
