Is your learner beginning to blend sounds and read simple words but still needs regular practice and support? In this small-group class, children will build the foundational reading and spelling skills they need to become more confident, independent readers.
Each 25-minute lesson follows a clear, predictable routine aligned with Science of Reading principles. We will begin with a brief review of a previously taught sound or pattern, introduce one new phonics concept, and then apply the skill through blending, word reading, spelling, sentence practice, and simple fluency activities.
Learners will practice skills such as:
Phonemic awareness
Blending and segmenting sounds
Short vowels
CVC words
Digraphs
Beginning and ending blends
Silent-e words
Early vowel teams
High-frequency words
Beginning spelling
Simple sentence reading
Fluency and expression
Basic reading comprehension
High-frequency words will be taught in a way that connects them to sounds and spelling patterns whenever possible. Words such as his, her, she, and he will be decoded and explained rather than taught only through memorization. Irregular words, such as the, will be taught by identifying the parts learners already know and explicitly practicing the unexpected part.
Lessons may include oral sound games, word building, picture sorting, guided reading, spelling practice, simple dictation, and occasional hands-on activities or printable pages. Because the class is capped at six learners, each child will have opportunities to participate, read aloud, and receive encouraging feedback.
This class is designed for learners who already know most letter names and sounds and are familiar with blending. Learners do not need to be fluent readers, but they should be ready to practice reading and spelling simple words.
Because this is an ongoing class, skills will be reviewed regularly and practiced in a variety of ways. Learners may join at any time as long as they have the foundational skills needed to participate successfully.
