What does it take to raise kids who stand up for what’s right, even when it’s hard? Who try new things even when they’re scared? Who trust God more than their fears?
It takes courage. And courage? Is something we can teach.
At WonderWell Learning, we believe education isn’t just about academics—it’s also about character building. Every month, we’re spotlighting one Christ-like character trait and exploring how it shows up in our homeschools, our classes, and our families. This month, we’re teaching courage to kids and building bravery in our homeschool.
God has called us to homeschool our children, parent with intention, and follow Him faithfully; that requires daily bravery. We get to teach our kids what that looks like, and they get to watch us live it out.
Courage isn’t the absence of fear—it’s acting in faith despite the fear. It’s the kindergartener who tries reading out loud even though the letters feel confusing. It’s the middle schooler who stands up for a friend being left out. It’s the teenager who shares their faith when it’s not popular. It’s the mom who chooses to homeschool even when everyone questions her decision.
For our kids, courage shows up in everyday moments. Trying a challenging new subject, making a new friend at co-op, admitting when they’re wrong, or standing up for what’s right, even when it’s hard.
For us as homeschool parents? Courage looks like trusting ourselves as our children’s primary educators. It’s saying no to comparison when we see those picture-perfect homeschool Instagram posts and asking for help when we need it.
Teaching courage in a homeschool setting means our kids get to see it modeled in real time. They watch us face uncertainty, make hard choices, and trust God through challenges, all the while learning that courage isn’t about being perfect or fearless, but about faithfulness.
In a world that often feels scary and uncertain, raising kids who know how to be brave, who trust God more than their fears, who stand firm in their faith is kingdom work.
This month, we’re anchoring our hearts in powerful promises from God’s Word.
Joshua 1:9 reminds us: “Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.”
2 Timothy 1:7 tells us: “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
Proverbs 28:1 declares: “The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion.”
These aren’t just nice words to hang on our walls; they’re truths to ground us when fear feels overwhelming. God doesn’t just ask us to be brave and leave us to figure it out. He promises to BE with us through every step.`
When our kids face something scary, we get to point them back to these truths. When we face something scary, we get to model what it looks like to trust God’s presence over our fear.

I’ll never forget the day my husband and I decided we were going to homeschool. Our twins were in preschool, and I couldn’t imagine sending them off to public school the next year. Neither my husband nor I were homeschooled, but we couldn’t deny the pull on our hearts that this was what was best for our girls.
I didn’t know what I was doing. We didn’t know many people who homeschooled. But we had faith that God wouldn’t put a calling on our hearts if it wasn’t for a reason.
That was six years ago. Looking back, I can see that choosing to homeschool wasn’t just about my girls’ education; it was about learning what courage really means. Courage isn’t the absence of fear; it’s doing what’s right despite fears, trusting that God is with us even when the path ahead is unclear.
This month, our family is focusing on small acts of bravery. My middle daughter wants to grow in public speaking. My son wants to learn to play piano with both hands. My oldest daughter wants to learn to longboard. And me? I’m finally making our family read-aloud time a priority again.
We’re learning together that courage isn’t about being fearless, it’s about being faithful.
